The Bugatti Trust provides support for the University of Bath’s Formula Student racing car team and welcomes its success.

The Formula Student event originated in the USA and now has approximately 200 teams worldwide. It was established 11 years ago to test participants engineering, design, business and team working skills. Each team is required to design and build a new racing car each year. The cars are normally based around a restricted 600 motorcycle engine, yet they have the acceleration and handling of supercars. Part of the project work involves the students attracting external sponsors to fund the build. Team Bath Racing recorded excellent results in the 2008 competition, which was held at Silverstone and was top UK based team for the second year running achieving a creditable fourth place overall.

Chairman of the Trust, Hugh Conway, said: “Part of our goal is to promote vehicle engineering education at the highest level. Formula Student has become a worldwide competition for undergraduate automotive engineering students, and we are pleased to be involved with one of the UK’s leading Mechanical Engineering Departments and were pleased to continue our support in2008.”

The outstanding performance over the weekend resulted in the team being awarded 4th place and the highest placed UK University.

Dr Geraint Owen, Senior Lecturer in Automotive Engineering, said: “The name Bugatti is synonymous with quality racing car design, and we are pleased that the Trust have identified Bath as a worthy partner. Like all motor sport activities, performance is partially limited by funding.

“The Bugatti Trust’s support will enable us to carry out significant further testing which should have a positive impact on our result at the event at Silverstone in July.”Ross Braun, the Team Principal of Honda F1, is patron of Formula Student and regards the experience of participating as a fantastic career opportunity. He says “I'm nervous when we hire an engineer without the kind of experience FS gives”
